Caught in the Act at Lee High Road
Ryan Kiely, 34, with no fixed address, was nabbed after staff at a BP garage on Lee High Road spotted him walking out with unpaid goods on February 25.
Kiely made a run for it but was quickly stopped by officers following a brief foot chase. Food and drink worth £85 were recovered and returned to the store.
Repeat Offender Finally Brought to Justice
After his arrest, police discovered Kiely was wanted on recall to prison and had a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) against him. He was also linked to two other shoplifting incidents at the same BP location, thanks to CCTV and witness statements.
He faced three counts of shoplifting and three of breaching his CBO.
Fast-Tracked to Jail
Kiely was remanded in custody, found guilty the very next day at Bromley Magistrates’ Court, and sentenced to 16 weeks behind bars.
Met Police Crack Down on Repeat Retail Crime
Chief Inspector Rav Pathania, the Met’s retail crime lead, said: “This conviction shows the Met’s focus on hitting repeat offenders who harm businesses and communities.”
“We work closely with retailers to gather solid evidence, use tools like Criminal Behaviour Orders, and get prolific criminals before the courts fast.”
“Officers who caught Kiely were new recruits, proving our commitment to smashing community crime and beefing up neighbourhood policing.”
