Man Charged with Manslaughter Over Woman’s Death Linked to Domestic Abuse

A man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a woman in Bexley, with detectives revealing the case is tied to a long history of domestic abuse.

Woman’s Tragic Death Sparks New Investigation

Gillian Morand, 36, died by suicide in March 2020. But after her inquest, fresh information surfaced suggesting she had suffered prolonged domestic abuse. This prompted the Metropolitan Police to launch a new, in-depth investigation.

Suspect Arrested and Charged

On 5 March 2026, officers arrested 45-year-old Seyhan Assaf of Sidcup. Following talks with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Assaf has now been charged with manslaughter and coercive or controlling behaviour linked to Gillian’s death.

It is alleged that his abusive actions over a significant period contributed directly to her tragic end.

Calls for Witnesses as Court Date Looms

Assaf is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on 7 March. Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten urged anyone who knew Gillian in the decade before her death to come forward.

“This is a complex investigation with very few charges of this nature authorised across the country. We are supporting Gillian’s family, who ask for their privacy at this difficult time. Any information, no matter how small it seems, could prove vital,” he said.

Witnesses can contact the Major Incident unit or call 101 quoting CAD number 4727/06MAR26.

CPS Confirms Strong Case Against Assaf

“We have decided to prosecute Seyhan Assaf for manslaughter and controlling or coercive behaviour,” said Samantha Yelland, Senior Crown Prosecutor. “After working closely with the Met, we believe there is sufficient evidence and it’s in the public interest for these charges to proceed.”

The Metropolitan Police continue to work with partners to support survivors of domestic abuse amid this high-profile case.
