A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a massive blaze ripped through the historic Big Mill in Leek, Staffordshire, forcing residents to flee their homes last night.
Inferno Lights Up Leek Night
The 18-year-old man, from Leek, was taken into custody following the devastating fire at the six-storey Grade II-listed mill. Police confirmed he is being questioned on suspicion of arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.
Neighbourhood residents described a terrifying scene as flames engulfed the mill – visible from miles away. One local said on Facebook: “Can’t believe we came across it as one of the first, shaking like a leaf, horrific!!! The noise was awful!”
Firefighters Battle Blaze Into Dawn
The fire broke out at 9.22 pm on Mill Street, with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service deploying up to six crews and an aerial ladder platform at the height of the emergency.
Station Manager Jonathan Ashby said: “The fire is under control but has yet to be extinguished as crews are unable to enter the building at this time. The large cordon is still in place and we’re expected to be in the area for some time whilst we work to bring the incident to a safe and swift conclusion.”
Parts of the mill appear to have collapsed or burned away. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area completely. Roads A523 Mill Street and Bellevue remain closed in both directions, causing traffic disruption.
Rich History Lost in Flames
The Big Mill dates back to 1857 and was once home to Wardle & Davenport, pioneers of artificial silk stocking manufacture and a major local employer with 2,500 workers at its peak.
The building was unoccupied at the time but has planning permission to be converted into 34 flats.
A fire service spokesman advised residents: “Please keep doors and windows closed and avoid the area to allow emergency crews to continue their work.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police continue to investigate the cause of the blaze and seek witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward.
