A shocking murder in Derbyshire has seen a 20-year-old man locked up for life after killing his stepfather and the family dog in a brutal attack.
Brutal Stabbing in Shirebrook
Armed police rushed to a Valley Road home in Shirebrook on the evening of 22 October 2025 after receiving a distress call. They arrested 19-year-old Logan Procter at the scene, suspected of murder. Victim Christopher Owen, 57, was found with more than 70 stab wounds, many concentrated on his head, neck, and face. The vicious assault began while he was asleep. His injuries were so severe that two vertebrae were chipped, and the first knife used bent during the attack, forcing Procter to use a combat knife to continue. Also found dead was the family’s Jack Russell dog, Poppy, who suffered 15 stab wounds.
Chilling Details Revealed in Court
Procter pleaded guilty to murder at Derby Crown Court. Prosecutors revealed he had created multiple “kill lists” targeting several people, with Mr Owen at the top. The list included Procter’s mother, another relative, and others known to him. Evidence showed Procter had been browsing the internet for ways to kill and disturbing sexual content ahead of the attack. During the violent five to seven-minute assault, Mr Owen fought back, sustaining defensive injuries to his arms and hands. Despite the horror, he did not die immediately, succumbing slowly to fatal wounds that severed his jugular vein. After killing both the victim and the dog, Procter calmly showered, changed, and then called 999. He later admitted to police he expected the killings to thrill him—but they did not.
Life Behind Bars with a Minimum of 20 Years
Judge Shaun Smith described the devastating impact, noting Mr Owen’s family is still grieving after losing another brother to murder in 2007. Procter’s mother tearfully told the court she had lost everything dear—both her partner and son. Following remand, Procter was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, mood disorder, and borderline learning disability. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, ordered to serve at least 20 years and 132 days before parole eligibility.
