Yaaqob Saleh convicted of sexual assault at Liverpool shop

A 20-year-old shop worker from Toxteth, Liverpool, has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for sexually assaulting a woman who entered his store looking for help after a night out. Yaaqob Saleh worked at the Liverpool One Newsagents and Convenience Store on Whitechapel.

Disturbing attack after St Patrick’s Day celebrations

The incident happened last March on St Patrick’s Day. The victim, whose phone had died, went into the shop to charge it and get a taxi home. Saleh allowed her to charge her phone and invited her to sit near a heater. But instead of helping, he touched her thigh, kissed her cheek, and put his hand up her skirt, groping her over her clothes. This was despite her repeated refusals. The victim curled into a ball and broke down in tears.

The sentence includes the sex offender register and a restraining order

Following a trial, Saleh was convicted of sexual assault. He has now been ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and given a four-year restraining order to keep away from the victim.
