Tragedy has struck the university community after 21-year-old Jamie Collins was found dead in the garden of a Filton property near Bristol in the early hours of April 9. Jamie, a promising robotics student at the University of the West of England, was allegedly murdered by his 23-year-old housemate, Zack Coughlan, who now faces murder charges.
Family Mourns Bright Future Cut Short
Jamie’s heartbroken family, from Swansea, say he had “his whole life ahead of him.” In a moving tribute issued through Avon and Somerset Police, they described Jamie as “bright, kind, gentle and unassuming.”
“He was looking forward to finishing his uni journey and planning to come home to us in Swansea in just a few weeks’ time,” the family said. “We know he was heading for a hugely successful future following his engineering and robotics degree.” “The outpouring of love and support from Jamie’s friends and ours has been completely overwhelming. We thank everyone for their kind messages while we continue to grieve privately.”
Friends and Community Pay Tribute
The Crofty Inn in Swansea, where Jamie once worked, also issued a heartfelt statement on Facebook. They called him “a much loved member of our team” and praised his “kind soul” and hard-working nature. “Jamie quickly won over the hearts of staff and locals, becoming part of the Crofty family,” the pub said. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him during this incredibly difficult time. The severity of the incident has been a devastating shock to everyone.” The pub asked for patience as staff come to terms with the loss, adding: “Rest in peace, Jamie. You will be deeply missed.”
Murder Trial Set for October
Zack Coughlan was arrested shortly after Jamie’s death and charged with murder. He appeared at Bristol Crown Court, where he was remanded in custody. The trial has been scheduled to begin on October 12 and is expected to last two weeks.
