Swindon Man Jailed for Reckless Overtaking That Left Children Seriously Injured
Thomas Grey, from Wroughton, was handed 26 months behind bars at Swindon Crown Court on 20th November 2020. He also faces a tough 49-month driving ban and will have to pass an extended driving retest. The sentence comes after a dangerous driving incident on 30th December 2019.
Disastrous Overtake on Blind Bend
On that fateful Monday morning at 7.30am, Grey was driving his Mitsubishi Spacestar along Wharf Road from Wroughton towards Swindon. He caught up with a small white van and a Seat Exeo, which was driven by an off-duty police officer, travelling around 40mph.
Ignoring the risks, Grey decided to overtake both vehicles on a sweeping right-hand bend with no clear view of oncoming traffic. His reckless move led to a head-on collision with a Toyota Aygo coming the other way.
Serious Injuries to Children and Driver
Despite desperate attempts to avoid the crash, both vehicles collided heavily. The impact caused serious injuries to the Toyota’s driver and two young children, whose identities are protected by law.
The harrowing moment was captured on the dashboard camera inside Grey’s Mitsubishi, preserving the chilling evidence of his dangerous manoeuvre.
PC Jonathan Brunt, part of the investigation team, said: “This significant sentence reflects the seriousness of this offence. Thomas Grey showed complete disregard for safety by overtaking without a clear view of the road ahead. This thoughtless act caused life-changing injuries to two young children and the driver of the Toyota Aygo. There is never an excuse for driving in this way. The ‘moment of madness’, as described by Grey and the judge, has devastated many lives.”
Wiltshire Police Back Road Safety Week
This week, Wiltshire Police is joining forces nationwide for Road Safety Week, led by the charity Brake.
They urge drivers to slow down and avoid risky moves. Excessive speed and dangerous driving don’t just cause crashes—they shatter families forever.
- Drive safely, especially on bends and narrow roads.
- Never overtake unless you have a clear and safe view ahead.
- Remember—reckless driving has real, tragic consequences.
