French schools observed a minute of silence on Monday to honour Dominique Bernard, a 57-year-old teacher who was fatally stabbed by a former pupil in Arras, in what the government has termed an Islamist terror attack. President Emmanuel Macron urged a “ruthless” approach towards extremists and emphasised the role of schools as a “bulwark” against extremism.

The knife attack, echoing a similar incident three years ago, prompted a heightened security response, with France elevating its attack alert level. Macron directed ministers to embody a state that is firm against those fostering hate and terrorist ideologies.
