French Teacher Murdered in Islamist Knife Attack
France is reeling after a brutal knife attack in Arras left teacher Dominique Bernard dead. The 57-year-old was fatally stabbed by a former pupil in what the French government calls an Islamist terror assault.
Macron Demands Ruthless Crackdown on Extremists
President Emmanuel Macron responded with a call for a “ruthless” approach towards extremists. He stressed schools must stand as a “bulwark” against radicalisation. At 2pm on Monday, French schools held a minute of silence for Bernard, pausing classes to discuss the horrific attack.
Attacker Already on Watchlist
The suspect, Mohammed Moguchkov, 20, born in Russia’s North Caucasus, reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar!” during the assault. He was already on a national security threat register and under tight surveillance. This chilling echo of the 2020 Samuel Paty beheading has raised alarm bells across the country.
Macron warned of a “special approach” targeting young men aged 16 to 25 from the Caucasus region. He has ordered ministers to act decisively against those spreading hate and terror.
Security Tightened as Nation Remembers
France has ramped up security and raised its attack alert level. Some 7,000 troops have been deployed to protect schools nationwide. The grim tally of Islamist-related attacks since 2012 now exceeds 260 victims.
The ongoing terror threat has pushed immigration and security to the top of the political agenda. A new immigration law is set for debate later this year, amid calls for stronger protections.
