A brave and heroic police dog tragically died yesterday while assisting officers in the search for a wanted man at Watermead Park, Birstall.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, 3 July, when officers were called to the park following a report that a suspect sought by Nottinghamshire Police was in the vicinity. During the response, the police dog was deployed to aid in locating the suspect.
The man attempted to flee from the officers and entered the water at Watermead Park. Tragically, the police dog also entered the water and subsequently became unresponsive. Despite being rushed to a veterinary clinic, the dog was pronounced dead.
After an extensive search of the area, the 27-year-old suspect was found in the park. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and later on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. The suspect is currently in police custody.
An ongoing investigation aims to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the dog’s death. Nottinghamshire Police are leading the investigation related to the initial offence for which the man was wanted.
Detective Inspector Claire Hughes expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is an extremely sad incident that has resulted in the death of one of our police dogs. Colleagues are supporting the dog’s handler at this understandably difficult time and our investigation to establish what happened is ongoing.”
