Seven people were injured earlier today when a double-decker bus veered off the road and crashed into scaffolding outside a shop on Harrow Road in Maida Vale, north-west London.
The incident unfolded shortly before 2:30 PM when the bus, carrying passengers, collided with a lamppost and several bollards before coming to a halt against the scaffolding of the West 9 Food & Wine store. Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and the Metropolitan Police, arrived promptly at the scene.
The Met Police released a statement: “Police were called at 14:18hrs on Tuesday, 16 July to reports of a bus in collision with scaffolding on Harrow Road, W9. Officers and London Ambulance Service attended. At the scene, the bus, which was carrying passengers, had collided with scaffolding on a commercial premises. Six people, including the bus driver, were treated by medics at the scene. None of the injuries are thought to be serious.”
The police statement continued: “Road closures and safety cordons are in place. There have been no arrests. Anyone who witnessed this incident or has dashcam footage should call police on 101 or post on X @MetCC quoting 4316/16JUL.
Pictures from the scene reveal the crumpled front of the number 18 bus, with its windscreen and driver’s side window shattered. The aftermath shows a trail of destruction, including a toppled lamppost and damaged bollards.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We were called at 2.19 PM today (16 July) to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Harrow Road and Sutherland Avenue, W9. We sent a number of resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, incident response officers, and members of our hazardous area response team (HART). Our first paramedics arrived in less than five minutes. We treated seven patients in total. We took four patients to hospital and discharged the other three at the scene.
Members of the public were seen gathered around the bus after the incident, with many expressing shock at the scene’s devastation.
The road remains closed, and safety cordons are in place as investigations continue. The cause of the crash is not yet known, and authorities are urging anyone with information or footage to come forward.
