Thousands Flock to Historic Wickham Horse Fair
Wickham, Hampshire—On Saturday 20th May 2017, hundreds poured into the streets of Wickham for the legendary Wickham Horse Fair. This annual event, near Fareham, has been a fixture for over 800 years, drawing traveller communities from across the UK for one of the country’s biggest horse trading spectacles.
No Organiser, Big Buzz
Despite having no official organiser, the fair has grown into one of just two major horse trading events nationwide. Thousands come to haggle, admire horses, and soak up the age-old atmosphere that spells tradition and excitement.
Safety and Order Under Watchful Eyes
The RSPCA and Hampshire Constabulary had a strong presence on site. Police quickly dealt with a couple of scuffles, ensuring the day stayed safe. Several poorly treated horses were promptly rescued by RSPCA officers, led by Superintendent Alison Heydari.
“The event is steeped in history for Wickham and we have been working closely with Hampshire County Council, Winchester City Council and Wickham Parish Council as well as locally licensed premises to help maintain a safe environment for visitors and residents to enjoy the day,” said Hampshire Constabulary.
Peace Prevails Despite Past Trouble
In recent years, the fair has remained largely peaceful. The most notable disruption was back in 2013, when six people were convicted following a public order incident involving high-powered catapults. This year, the mood was much calmer, with a festive atmosphere dominating the village.
