A woman has died after a car was reportedly seen travelling the wrong way along the A42 before a collision involving three vehicles. Emergency services were called to the slip road of the northbound A42 at Junction 14 for Tongue shortly after 2.30pm on Sunday (9 August). The collision involved a silver Vauxhall Astra, a silver Ford Kuga and an HGV. The driver of the Astra, a woman aged in her 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger travelling in the Ford Kuga suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital receiving treatment. Two other occupants of the vehicle escaped serious injury. The HGV driver was not injured.

Leicestershire Police said officers attending the collision were informed that the Astra had been seen travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway before the crash. Detectives from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Detective Sergeant Charlotte Mee said: “Our investigation to understand the circumstances of this incident is continuing and I’m appealing for anyone who can help to get in touch. “I’d like to speak to anyone who was on the A42 around the time the collision occurred and either saw what happened or saw any of the vehicles involved beforehand. “I’d particularly like to speak to anyone who captured the incident on a dashcam as any footage could assist with our enquiries.” Police are particularly keen to obtain dashcam footage from motorists travelling on the A42 around the time of the collision.
