A major emergency service response is under way at Camber Sands tonight, with a Coastguard rescue helicopter, air ambulance and rescue teams reported at the scene. Eyewitnesses have reported seeing a HM Coastguard helicopter carrying out repeated search patterns off Camber Sands, near Rye, on Sunday evening. A Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance helicopter has also been reported landing at Camber, while witnesses say Coastguard teams and a rescue boat have been involved in the operation. Several people in the area reported seeing helicopters circling above the beach and sea before emergency medical resources arrived. Flight-tracking information shared by residents appeared to show a Coastguard aircraft conducting a search pattern offshore, while an air ambulance was subsequently seen on the ground at Camber.

Reports of casualties

There are unconfirmed eyewitness reports of multiple casualties connected with an incident in the water. One witness has claimed that three people were involved and that people were recovered from the sea. However, these details have not yet been confirmed by police, HM Coastguard or the ambulance service, and reports circulating on social media that somebody has died should therefore be treated as unverified. The presence of a Coastguard helicopter carrying out a search pattern, together with an air ambulance and reported rescue-boat deployment, indicates a significant emergency operation. UKNIP has been unable to find a published official statement confirming the circumstances or outcome of tonight’s incident at the time of writing. Emergency services have been approached for further information. This is a developing incident and will be updated when confirmed information becomes available.
