The A31 has been closed in both directions in Hampshire after a major HGV fire spread to roadside vegetation and trees, prompting a large emergency service response. National Highways confirmed the incident has forced the closure of a significant stretch of the A31 between the New Forest and Ringwood, with 16 fire appliances reported to be involved in the operation. The lorry fire spread from the vehicle into adjacent verges and trees, with firefighters working to bring the blaze under control. The westbound A31 is closed between the M27 Junction 2 at Ower and the A338 at Ringwood. In the opposite direction, the eastbound carriageway is closed between the A338 and M27 Junction 1 at Cadnam. 
Motorists are being warned to expect significant delays, with lengthy diversion routes in operation.
Major firefighting operation
The deployment of 16 fire appliances represents a substantial response as crews deal with both the burning HGV and the fire that has spread into surrounding vegetation. Emergency services remain at the scene and there is currently no indication of when the A31 will fully reopen. There has been no confirmation at this stage of any injuries.
Long diversions in place
Westbound motorists are being diverted from the M27 at Junction 2 and directed towards the A35, travelling through areas including Ashurst, Lyndhurst and Christchurch before using the A3060 and A338 to return to the A31. Eastbound traffic is being diverted from the A31 at Ashley Heath onto the A338 towards Bournemouth before travelling via the A3060 and A35 through Christchurch and Lyndhurst and eventually returning towards the M27. National Highways has advised anyone whose journey is affected to allow additional travelling time. Drivers approaching the area should follow signs and instructions from emergency services and traffic officers. The closure comes as firefighters contend with dry vegetation and the risk of flames spreading beyond the vehicle into the surrounding roadside area. This is a developing incident.
