A 24-year-old man has died after being pulled from the sea during a major emergency service operation at Camber Sands in East Sussex. Emergency services rushed to the popular beach on Sunday evening (9 August) following reports that three people had got into difficulty in the water. A major search and rescue operation was launched involving the Coastguard, a rescue helicopter, lifeboat crews, police and ambulance teams. Two of those involved — a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man — managed to make their way safely out of the water. However, a third swimmer, aged 24, remained in difficulty, prompting an extensive search of the sea off Camber Sands.
