Drama as 9-Year-Old Trapped in Well on Isle of Wight
Emergency crews are in a race against time to rescue a child trapped 3 metres deep in a well on the Isle of Wight this afternoon. Firefighters from Shanklin, Ryde, and Newport rushed to the scene on Whitwell Road, near Ventnor, shortly after 3.30pm on Tuesday, May 29.
Major Rescue Operation Underway
The youngster, believed to be just 9 years old, reportedly fell down the well while playing hide and seek with his sister. Firefighters have lowered a rescue worker using an Arizona tripod system and are using ropes to assist in the delicate operation. Paramedics from Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are on site treating the child, whose condition remains unclear.
Nearby residents revealed the family had recently moved into the property, and the child and his sister had been visiting them.
Road Closures and Air Ambulance Called In
Whitwell Road is closed between Sheepwash Lane and Southford Lane, with traffic diverted via Merryl Lane. Authorities have called in support from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Twenty firefighters and two officers are battling to free the child safely. After being recovered, the child was placed on a scoop stretcher and airlifted to southampton/" title="Southampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton General Hospital alongside his mother.
It is understood that the child fell down the well whilst playing a game of hide and seek with his sister,” said Geoff Walls from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue.
