Thames Valley Police Give Custody Cell a Colour Makeover to Calm Kids in Crisis

New Look, Less Threatening

Thames Valley Police are trialling a fresh colour scheme in an Abingdon custody cell. The move follows a damning report from HMICFRS urging forces to create less intimidating environments for detained children.

Calm Colours for Troubled Teens

Supt Katy Barrow-Grint, Head of Criminal Justice, explained the thinking behind the makeover: “Being held in custody can be a tough time. Painting the cell in a calming colour helps create a less threatening space, especially for young people who have to be detained. We hope it makes a real difference.”

A Tribute to a Longstanding Leader

The revamped cell, dubbed “Cherrington’s Cell,” honours Chief Insp Dave Cherrington. He’s led custody at Thames Valley Police for eight years and is retiring after 30 years of service.
