Caught Red-Handed on the M4
John James Withey, 44, from Northampton, was stopped by police on December 18, 2025. Officers spotted him driving an articulated HGV between junctions 16 and 15 on the M4. A roadside drug test at the DVSA Weighbridge at junction 15 revealed he had cannabis in his system – nearly double the legal limit.
Police Speak Out on Danger of Drug-Driving HGVs
PC Ben Greening warned: “Driving while impaired is dangerous in any circumstance, but behind the wheel of a heavy goods vehicle it’s a recipe for disaster. Withey was almost twice the drug‑drive limit. We will continue to take robust action against anyone choosing to drive under the influence and risk public safety.”
Penalty Delivered
Withey pleaded guilty at Swindon Magistrates Court today (16/4). He was fined £750, hit with a £300 surcharge, and ordered to pay £85 costs alongside a 17-month driving disqualification.
