Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes has revealed a worrying spate of arson attacks in north west London targeting Jewish and Iranian communities. Three separate incidents, including attacks on volunteer ambulances, a synagogue, and a Persian-language media office, have prompted multiple arrests and a major police probe.

Details of the Fires and Arrests

  • The first attack hit volunteer-led ambulances linked to the Jewish community in Golders Green on 23 March.
  • An attempted arson at a Finchley synagogue occurred shortly after midnight on 15 April.
  • The latest incident involved a firebomb thrown at a Persian-language media organisation’s offices on the evening of 15 April. Thankfully, the fire extinguished itself with no injuries or damage.

Following the latest attack, three suspects — a 16-year-old boy and two men aged 19 and 21 — were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remain in custody. In relation to the Finchley synagogue attack, a 47-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man have also been detained, while two more arrests linked to the Golders Green ambulances incident were made recently. So far, eight arrests have been made, with three charged.

Counter Terrorism Police Lead Investigation

While the incidents have not been officially labelled as terrorism, officers are keeping all motivations open. Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigations, backed by Metropolitan Police resources.

“London’s Jewish communities and the Iranian diaspora have increasingly been targeted by hostile groups and states intent on spreading fear and hate,” said Deputy Commissioner Jukes. “We understand why these events are deeply worrying.”

Police Crackdown on Hate Crimes

Police have ramped up patrols and resources, resulting in 28 arrests for hate crimes, particularly those targeting Jewish communities.

“We have seen racist and antisemitic hate crimes and know some individuals are being persuaded or paid to act on behalf of foreign organisations and states,” Jukes warned. “If you act out of hatred, racism, or antisemitism, we will come after you.”

He added: “If you think crime will earn you quick cash for others, think again – the consequences will be severe and far beyond everyday criminality. Those who act for foreign interests will be abandoned and face justice alone.”

Unity in the Face of Threats

Jukes paid tribute to London’s diverse communities for standing together after recent attacks.

“London is inclusive and diverse. Communities came together in solidarity to reject hate and violence after the Golders Green attack. We will continue to do so.”

He finished with a clear message to Londoners:

  1. You should not live in fear or alter your daily life to feel safe.
  2. Police maintain the highest level of sustained operational commitment.
  3. We stand with our communities—not just in words, but in visible, daily action.
