A Stafford father has been locked up for life after murdering his five-week-old baby daughter following a horrific abuse spree.
Baby Darcy-Leigh Left with Devastating Injuries
Little Darcy-Leigh Jefferson suffered a catastrophic brain injury and a staggering 47 rib fractures before her tragic death. The tiny tot, born five weeks premature on February 20, 2022, endured repeated physical assaults. She also sustained fractures to both legs over the ten days leading up to her death on March 29, 2022.
Sean Jefferson Sentenced to Minimum 22 Years
Darcy-Leigh’s dad, Sean Jefferson, was convicted of her murder and jailed with a minimum sentence of 22 years. The court was told the fatal attack happened between 7am and 7.18am on March 27 when Jefferson took the baby downstairs and violently shook her.
“He put a stop to Darcy screaming. He did that by shaking his five-week-old daughter violently,” said prosecution counsel Harpreet Sandhu KC.
Mother Sentenced for Allowing Abuse to Continue
Mother Amy Leigh Clark was handed a seven-year sentence after being found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child and two counts of causing or allowing serious harm. The court heard Clark turned a blind eye as Jefferson carried out the abuse. Clark appeared to be a loving, in-control mum, but secretly battled substance abuse, including alcohol and cocaine, while living in a tidy home. Jefferson was also a drug user, smoking cannabis during a volatile and aggressive relationship filled with heated arguments.
Police Respond to Horrific Case
“Darcy was violently abused and murdered by her father. Her mother allowed her death. This was despicable behaviour against a defenceless child,” said Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald. “Her short life and tragic death must not be forgotten. The entire investigation team’s thoughts remain with her elder sibling, who has faced unimaginable loss and a lengthy judicial process.”
