Sailor Dies in Tragic Cowes Sailing Accident
A sailor in his 40s has died in a shocking accident during a major race off Cowes this morning. The man became trapped in a sheet sail and was dragged into the water, witnesses reveal.
Heroic Rescue Attempt
A passing sailor spotted him struggling and plunged into the water to try and free him. The Cowes RNLI Lifeboat crew quickly arrived and performed CPR on the trapped man.
A huge lifesaving operation unfolded near Trinity landing point on the Isle of Wight, involving two helicopters and a coastguard team. Despite desperate efforts, the sailor tragically died at St Mary’s Hospital.
Accident Details and Official Response
The accident happened when the vessel was gybing close to Osborne Bay. The victim fell while handling the boat’s sails during the race.
Lendy Cowes Week organisers confirmed the death of one competitor this morning (Friday 10th August). “The casualty was transferred ashore by a safety boat and taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. Next of kin have been informed,” said a spokesperson.
The team expressed their condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has launched a formal inquiry into the freak incident.
