Smash and Dash: Over 6,200 Speeding Fines Since Lockdown Hit Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester Police have clocked more than 6,200 drivers tearing past speed limits since lockdown kicked off on March 23. Despite strict rules banning non-essential travel, some motorists are still flooring it on eerily quiet roads.

Speeding Soars by 57% in Trouble Spots

While most locals stick to the rules, reckless drivers are causing chaos. In hotspot areas, speeding has shot up by 57% in recent weeks. GMP is now ramping up patrols to nab these speed demons and protect frontline emergency services.

Officers Demand Road Safety—Fast Driving Means Deadly Crashes

“Speeding can have devastating consequences,” warned Superintendent Julie Ellison of GMP’s Specialist Operations Team. “It not only raises the risk of crashes but worsens their severity—sometimes fatally.”

She added: “With emergency services stretched, speeding collisions drain vital NHS, fire, and police resources. We’ve seen disgraceful cases like 115mph on a 40mph street, and a snarling 129mph on the M62. The limits aren’t a joke. They save lives.”

Chiefs Call for Public Help to Catch Speeding Scofflaws

Ellison’s officers are hunting these drivers, who treat quiet roads like race circuits. The force is teaming up with local communities to stop the madness.

“Please report any speeding or reckless driving in your area to help us target trouble spots,” said Ellison. “Together, we can keep Greater Manchester safe. Stay Home. Save Lives.”
