Portsmouth Seafront Road to Close for Safer Outdoor Exercise
Portsmouth City Council is shutting down most of the seafront road from 1 May. The move aims to help residents safely cycle, jog, and walk with their families amid rising numbers getting active outdoors.
Major Road Closures from 1 May
The seafront road will be closed to vehicles from 6am on Friday, 1 May. Two sections will be affected:
- Between the Ocean at the End of The Lane (Western end of Canoe Lake) and St George’s Road
- From the D-Day Car Park to Hovertravel
Emergency services and local businesses will still have full access along the closed routes.
Council Backs Move to Boost Safe Exercise
“In response to residents’ requests, we are helping those local to the seafront stay safe while exercising by closing the majority of the seafront road to vehicles,” said Cllr Lynne Stagg, Cabinet member for Traffic and Transportation.
“I also remind everyone to stay home unless making an essential journey. When walking, running, or cycling, maintain at least 2 metres distance from others.”
More Road Closures Could Be on the Way
The council is exploring additional roads for closure to support social distancing during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. This effort is designed to make exercising outdoors safer and more accessible for Portsmouth residents.
