Ghost Broker Rodney Van der Puye Snared in £50k Insurance Scam
Rodney Bruce Van der Puye, 34, of Southwark, pocketed around £50,000 in just 15 months by acting as an illegal ‘ghost broker.’ He sold dodgy motor insurance policies using his, his mother’s, and innocent people’s identities to scam some of the UK’s biggest insurance companies.
Insurance Fraud Bureau Uncovers Massive Scam
The Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) spotted 28 suspicious policies linked to Van der Puye early on. They handed the case to the City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED), who uncovered over 100 fake policies in total. Many of these were disguised under different names and fake addresses over two years.
Van der Puye Caught Red-Handed
During a police raid on his mother’s home, officers seized three phones, packed with solid evidence. Forensic experts cracked the PIN on one device, revealing more than 50 WhatsApp chats and texts arranging fraudulent insurance policies. Messages had customers openly calling him by name, desperate for cheap, illegal cover.
Van der Puye charged between £80 and £150 per bogus policy. Bank records showed £50,000 flowing through accounts linked to him and his former partner, including £27,000 transferred directly to Van der Puye and thousands paid to his mother.
Sentenced but Suspended – Justice Served
Van der Puye pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering, and running an unlicensed claims service. On July 6, 2022, he was sentenced to 21 months in prison, suspended for two years, and must complete 180 hours of unpaid work.
Detective Sergeant Adam Maskell said: “We knew we were dealing with a seasoned ghost broker, but the evidence we seized showed the true scale and seriousness of his crimes.”
“His customers were no innocent victims — many knew exactly what they were doing.”
Stephen Dalton, Head of Intelligence and Investigations at the IFB, added: “Van der Puye wasn’t just selling fake policies. His customers wanted to drive uninsured without getting caught. This case shows just how dangerous and widespread insurance fraud can be.”
This bust sends a clear message: using a ghost broker is a criminal gamble that can end in disaster. With Van der Puye behind bars, UK roads are safer, and fraudsters warned — the law is watching.
