Firearms Officer Under Homicide Investigation Over Streatham Shooting

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a homicide probe into a firearms officer involved in the fatal shooting of Mr Kaba in Streatham Hill. Assistant Commissioner Amanda Pearson confirmed the serious development, saying:

“The Independent Office for Police Conduct has announced that a firearms officer is now the subject of a homicide investigation. My thoughts and sympathies remain with Mr Kaba’s friends and family. I also understand how concerned our communities are and how this significant update will affect them.”

Met Police Cooperating Fully Amid Tense Community Concerns

The Met Police are fully cooperating as the IOPC independently investigates the circumstances surrounding the shooting on Monday, September 5th. The vehicle Mr Kaba was in had been stopped after an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system linked it to a recent firearms offence.

Assistant Commissioner Pearson addressed community worries, especially within Black communities, saying:

“I absolutely understand that this shooting is a source of great concern, particularly for our Black communities.”

She also acknowledged the pressures on firearms officers:

“I understand what a difficult and often dangerous job firearms officers face daily to protect the public. When they discharge their weapons – which is very rare – they expect intense scrutiny.”

Officer Removed from Duty Pending Investigation

The firearms officer involved has been taken off operational duties as per formal post-incident procedures. A senior officer will now review the officer’s future work status in light of the homicide investigation.

The IOPC stressed that this decision does not imply any proven criminal offence yet. They urge the public to allow the investigation to run its course:

“I would urge the public to give the IOPC the time and space it needs to complete its investigation.”

This case remains a flashpoint for community tensions and policing scrutiny as the inquiry continues.
