Spy Scandal: UK Diplomat Sentenced for Selling Secrets to Russia
British Embassy Betrayal
David Smith, 58, has been slammed with a 13-year, two-month prison sentence for selling classified UK secrets to Russia. Using his role at the British embassy in Berlin, Smith gathered sensitive information that risked lives and threatened national security.
Catastrophic Security Breach
The Old Bailey revealed the fallout could be “potentially catastrophic” for British officials in Berlin. The security overhaul alone is expected to cost a staggering £820,000.
Hatred and Sympathy
Smith openly admitted he disliked both the UK and Germany and showed sympathy for Russian authorities. Nick Price, head of the Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, condemned Smith’s betrayal.
“Smith abused his position in the British embassy in Berlin to covertly collect and pass sensitive information to the Russian state,” said Price. “These crimes were an attack on our country and could have jeopardised national security.”
He added that Smith’s treachery was driven by more than just money and greed.
