Concrete Munchers to Tear Down M27 Footbridge in Overnight M27 Meltdown

The M27 is set for a 24-hour shutdown next month as noisy ‘concrete munching’ machines demolish the North Fareham Footbridge. Get ready for major disruption on June 14-15 between Junctions 9 and 11.

Night-time Motorway Mayhem

From 9pm on Friday, June 14, to 9pm Saturday, June 15, Highways England will shut the M27 between Junction 9 and Junction 11. This is part of the ongoing upgrade transforming the motorway into a smart motorway between Junctions 4 and 11.

The key job? Grinding down the old North Fareham Footbridge, which sits between Junctions 10 and 11. The demolition will involve heavy-duty machines dubbed ‘concrete munchers’ stationed right on the carriageway.

Road users should brace for loud noise and possible disturbances during the crunch and munch.

Follow the A27 Diversion – Plan Your Route

The closure means motorists must follow a carefully planned diversion along the A27.

  • Westbound (J11 to J9): Exit at Junction 11, follow signs onto the A27 towards Gosport, through Titchfield, Sarisbury, Bursledon, and rejoin at Junction 9.
  • Eastbound (J9 to J11): Exit at Junction 9, head along the A27 via Segensworth, St Margaret’s, Titchfield gyratory, and Quay Street roundabout before returning at Junction 11.
  • Eastbound (J10 to J11): Divert via the A32 at Junction 10 through Fareham Town Centre and Portchester, with a rejoin back onto the M27 at Junction 11.

Heads Up: Expect Delays and Disruptions

Motorists are urged to plan ahead and expect delays. The demolition is critical for the motorway upgrade but will cause annoyance with noise and traffic headaches.

Once the footbridge is munched and cleared, the M27 will reopen fully.

Stay alert and follow all diversion signage during the weekend closure to avoid being caught out.
