Emergency gas engineers rushed to the scene, backed by West Sussex Fire Service and Sussex Police. The area was quickly sealed off as crews hunted down the source of the leak.

The local Kings Centre was opened by the council to provide shelter and warmth while the repair work went on.

“We are currently dealing with a mains gas leak in the Moat Road area of East Grinstead and have been working with Sussex Police to evacuate residents,” said West Sussex Fire Service. “Crews from Turners Hill, East Grinstead Fire Rescue, and Forest Row are attending. Engineers from SGN Gas are on scene fixing the leak.”

At 2am, fire crews updated: “Repairs are making good progress. We are now working to help residents return to their homes following the earlier evacuation. A strong smell of gas remains, so please keep windows and doors closed.”
