Brutal Attack on Dog Handler Shocks Sheffield
Adam Burgin, 29, from Thrybergh, is facing jail after a vicious attack on PC Dan Lumley last September. The assault left PC Lumley with serious facial injuries and lasting scars. The incident unfolded on Pingles Crescent when PC Lumley responded to a distress call with his police dog, PD Vinnie.
Police Officer Left Seriously Injured
The 999 call reported Burgin smashing vehicles, wielding a baseball bat, and threatening to kill family members. When PC Lumley tried to calm the situation and arrest Burgin, he was violently assaulted. Burgin threw the officer to the ground, pinned him down, and punched him more than five times.
- Broken nose
- Injuries to left eye
- Loss of smell requiring ongoing treatment
- Permanent scarring to his face
Burgin then fled but was soon arrested at his home and charged.
PC Lumley Speaks Out After Verdict
“After the attack, I questioned why I joined the police and if I wanted to continue,” PC Lumley said. “We join to protect our community, not to be assaulted. I have a family at home; no one deserves this.”
“I was there to protect victims and their property but ended up seriously hurt. Police officers, ambulance and fire crews face real risk, but we do not tolerate assaults.”
“Thankfully, I’m recovering and PD Vinnie and I are back on duty. These attacks take a toll on all of us.”
Swift Justice and Strong Warning
Detective Emma Parsons highlighted the swift jury decision, delivered in less than 30 minutes. “The overwhelming majority of our community supports police and rejects violence towards officers,” she said.
Judge Miss Recorder Betty plans to hand down an immediate custodial sentence, sending a strong message to anyone thinking assaults on emergency workers are acceptable.
Burgin was found guilty of Section 47 assault and is due for sentencing on Tuesday 13 April at Sheffield Crown Court.
