Jealous Ex Terrorises Woman and Son with Samurai Sword Attack
Darren Daniel, 34, turned violent after splitting from his girlfriend of two years earlier this year. The nightmare began when Daniel forced his way into his ex’s home on 25 March and brutally attacked her and her 11-year-old son, leaving the boy with head wounds.
Threats, Calls, and Armed Break-In
Police say Daniel had previously threatened the victim with a firearm. After the attack, he bombarded his ex with texts and calls warning, “things would get bad” if she didn’t drop the complaint.
The ordeal escalated to terrifying levels on 5 April. At 4am, Daniel and an accomplice smashed in a patio door while the woman and her son slept. Wielding a samurai sword, Daniel snarled, “I’m going to kill you.”
Police Hunt Ends with Arrest in Cupboard
A wanted appeal followed, and officers tracked Daniel down at an address in Dunscroft the same morning. He was found hiding in a cupboard.
“Daniel was coercive, controlling and violent towards his victim. He posed a real risk to her, her son, and her new partner,” said DC Stephen Barnes. “I’m pleased we located him and secured this sentence.”
Jail Sentence Delivers Justice
Daniel pleaded guilty on 6 October and faced Doncaster Crown Court on 13 November. He was jailed for nine years over the April home invasion and a further two years for earlier assaults, harassment, and intimidating witnesses. The total 11-year sentence will run consecutively.
The second man involved remains at large as police investigations continue.
DI Anna Sedgwick, head of Doncaster’s domestic abuse unit, praised the victim’s bravery. “Without her courage, this result wouldn’t have been possible,” she said. “I hope others in abusive situations are encouraged to speak out and seek help.”
“We are committed to supporting victims and bringing offenders like Daniel to justice.”
