Police Sergeant Left With Serious Injuries After Brutal Brighton Attack
A Sussex Police officer has been savagely assaulted while trying to break up a fight in Brighton. Sgt Alec Barrett was blindsided by a man who ran up from behind and punched him square in the face. The attacker didn’t stop there—he pummelled Sgt Barrett repeatedly as he lay on the ground.
Horrific Injuries, Lenient Sentence
Sgt Barrett was rushed to hospital with a concussion, a broken eye socket, a broken nose, and cheek damage. Despite the brutal attack, Jonathan Beauchamp, the assailant, walked away with a suspended one-year sentence. He also faces a five-month curfew, 120 hours of community work, and a £2,000 compensation bill.
The sentence has sparked outrage. The Sussex Police Federation blasted the ruling as far too soft for an attack leaving an officer badly hurt.
Police Federation Demands Tougher Punishments
“Custodial sentences are the strongest deterrent against such attacks,” said Sgt Raffaele Cioffi, Deputy Secretary of the Sussex Police Federation. “We need courts to take serious action to protect the protectors.”
Last year, police officers across England and Wales faced over 41,000 assaults. In Sussex alone, more than 1,300 officers were attacked.
Officers Urge Government to Back Harsher Sentencing
The Federation is pressing the government to overhaul sentencing rules for violent crimes against cops. Sgt Barrett, still shaken and wary about returning to duty, thanked the public for their support but warned this case highlights the daily dangers police face.
