Fog and Rough Seas Spark Dramatic Mayday Rescue off Eastbourne
In a tense early morning drama, three lifeboat crews raced to save a stranded motor cruiser 13.5 miles east of Eastbourne. Thick fog and rough seas made the daring rescue even trickier.
Mechanical Failures Leave Crew Sick and Stranded
At 7:57 am, the cruiser was hit by mechanical problems while shrouded in a dense fog patch. The worsening sea conditions left the crew battling seasickness as they sent out a urgent mayday call. Maritime rescue teams scrambled to their aid without a moment to lose.
First-Timer Coxswain Leads Lifeboat Team to Success
Dean, on his first mission as Coxswain of Eastbourne Lifeboat RNLB Esme Anderson, quickly teamed up with the Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat and RNLI Rye Harbour Lifeboat. Pett Level’s crew reached the stricken cruiser first, stabilising the situation and caring for the crew.
Eastbourne’s lifeboat then took charge, towing the disabled vessel safely back to shore, where coastguards waited.
