In a landmark case Muhammad Talukdar, 51, of Ballance Street, Bath, was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court on May 31. Talukdar’s conviction follows a protracted investigation into his sexual abuse of a young girl in Tower Hamlets, East London, which began in 1998.
Despite significant challenges, including the absence of DNA evidence and recent witness testimonies, specialist officers initiated their inquiry in 2020. Their determination to build a robust case against Talukdar led them to conduct thorough interviews with the victim’s friends and family and meticulously review medical records that documented the extent of the abuse. Crucially, the victim allowed access to her counselling session notes, providing additional evidence that fortified the case.
Talukdar was found guilty in March 2024 of three counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault, culminating in Friday’s sentencing.
Detective Constable Paul Hawthorn, who spearheaded the investigation, commended the victim’s courage. “I’d like to commend the bravery of the victim for her strength throughout this investigation. I hope this case serves as inspiration to others who may understandably fear speaking out against this kind of abhorrent abuse,” he said.
Hawthorn also praised the officers involved in the case, stating, “Officers showed true determination in securing justice on behalf of the victim, and I’d like to thank them for their dedication – they are a credit to the Met. We will continue to build cases against dangerous predators like Talukdar as part of our commitment to protecting women and girls and eradicating sexual violence.”
The Metropolitan Police urge anyone who has suffered abuse, regardless of how long ago it occurred, to come forward. “We would urge anyone who has been a victim of abuse – no matter how long ago – to please come forward to police and get the support you so rightly deserve,” Hawthorn emphasised.
