In the wake of reports of a man wielding a machete, some parents in Washington, Tyne and Wear are keeping their children at home on Friday, despite assurances from Northumbria Police that there is no immediate threat.

Reports and School Lockdowns

By Thursday, a number of local schools-initiated lockdown procedures, promptly informing parents and carers via text messages and Facebook to ensure the safety of students during this unsettling period.

Police Response and Community Reassurance

Northumbria Police acknowledged the reports, explaining that the initial sightings occurred the previous evening. A spokesperson stated that there is no ongoing incident, emphasising that the lockdowns were precautionary measures. To reassure the community, police have increased their presence in the Lambton area.

“Despite the police statement, confusion reigns among parents,” said one concerned mother. “If the sighting was on Tuesday, why were schools locked down on Thursday?”

Another parent shared her immediate response on Facebook on Friday, stating, “I went straight to the school and picked mine up. The kids were panicking in school; I wanted them home with us so I knew they were safe. It’s traumatising for the kids—mine are still home today (Friday).”

Parental Concerns and Criticisms

Social media has been awash with parents questioning the timing and necessity of the lockdowns if there was no immediate danger. Criticism has also been directed at the police’s social media communication strategy, with calls for clearer and more timely updates.

A police statement on Facebook read: “We are aware that a small number of schools have taken the decision to go into lockdown independently. There continues to be a lot of speculation surrounding potential sightings, and we urge people not to spread misinformation.”

Ongoing Investigation

Northumbria Police continue to investigate the situation and have encouraged residents to remain vigilant. They are urging anyone with credible information to contact them on 101, quoting log NP-20240620-0144.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, demanding more transparency and efficient communication from authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of their children.
