Kent Fire Service Rolls Out Rapid Response Water Rescue Vehicles
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has upgraded its emergency fleet with new 4×4 water rescue vehicles, aiming to slash response times and boost effectiveness during water-related emergencies. Two vehicles are already active in Kent and Medway, with three more set to hit the roads soon.
Speed and Efficiency: The Fleet’s Game-Changing Features
These powerhouse vehicles are stationed at key fire stations and manned by crews specially trained for floods, mud, and water rescues. Each is packed with cutting-edge gear tailored for water emergencies, including the ability to carry inflatable motorised boats onboard—no more slow towing. This means crews can launch at blue light speeds, getting to the scene faster than ever.
The inflatable boats can be used with or without motors and are quick to inflate, allowing rescue teams to reach victims swiftly and safely, even from tricky spots near the shore.
Urgent Need: Kent’s Rising Water Rescue Challenge
Grant Brooker, Water Rescue and Flooding Lead for KFRS, said: “We’re a forward-thinking fire and rescue service, always pushing to improve our response and save lives. These new vehicles give us everything needed to tackle rescues on unstable surfaces like water and mud and respond to floods.”
Brooker warned of the critical situation in Kent, which ranks joint third in the UK for accidental drownings. “With so many waterways and a vast coastline, having the right kit and crews ready to respond fast is essential,” he added.
‘Make the Right Call’ Campaign Targets Drowning Toll
KFRS has also launched the “Make the Right Call” campaign to educate the public on who to contact during water emergencies. For inland water incidents, always dial 999 and ask for the fire service. If the emergency is by the sea, contact the Coastguard instead.
