Royal Navy Sailor Under Spy Cloud for Stealing Nuclear Submarine Secrets

A Royal Navy sailor faces a serious probe after top-secret papers were found on his Huawei phone at the HMNB Clyde submarine base in Faslane, Scotland. Marcus Gauntlett, 36, an Able Seaman and steward on a nuclear-armed Vanguard-class sub, is suspected of having confidential documents linked to the UK’s nuclear deterrent.

Classified Docs Found on Phone Raise Alarm

The Vanguard-class subs carry Trident 2 D5 missiles — the backbone of Britain’s nuclear forces. Military police discovered sensitive information on Gauntlett’s phone during a separate investigation. The leaked intel reportedly detailed submarine movements, sparking fresh security fears.

Officials have ruled out espionage as the motive, but the breach has left experts rattled.

MoD Confirms Ongoing Investigation

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said, “We can confirm that a member of the Armed Forces is under investigation.” The Royal Navy is tightening its grip on security, determined to clamp down on leaks.

Recent Royal Navy Scandals Darken the Waters

  • This isn’t the first security blunder shaking the Royal Navy. In March, seven sailors were arrested in Bahrain for stealing laptops and iPads from a duty-free shop on a US base.
  • The crew allegedly used alarm-proof bags to swipe tech gadgets, selling stolen goods at half price.
  • Some suspects were handcuffed and marched off HMS Middleton during a joint UK-US investigation.

A Royal Navy rep commented, “We are aware of the alleged incident, which is currently under investigation.”

Security Clampdown to Prevent Further Leaks

With the probe into Marcus Gauntlett ongoing, the military is reviewing all security measures to stop any more sensitive info slipping through the cracks.
