Ex-Met Police Officer Gets Sentence Boost After Shocking Rape Conviction

Former Met officer Cliff Mitchell, 24, has been slammed with a longer prison term after being found guilty of 13 counts of rape — including an attack on a child. Initially handed a life sentence with a minimum of 13 years and 225 days at Croydon Crown Court, the Court of Appeal deemed it too lenient. They upped his minimum term to 17 years and 225 days.

Gruesome Crimes Spanning Nearly a Decade

Mitchell’s vile crimes spanned from 2014 to 2023 and included over 50 sexual assaults on two female victims. His worst atrocity was the September kidnap last year, where he bound a woman with cable ties and gagged her with duct tape. At trial, he was described as a controlling predator who used fear and physical restraints to dominate his victims.

Appeal Judges Slam Lenient Sentence

The Court of Appeal acted after the Solicitor General referred the case, stressing the brutal and premeditated nature of Mitchell’s offences. Representing the Solicitor General, Paul Jarvis said the original sentence failed to reflect the systematic horror of Mitchell’s crimes, calling his campaign of rape particularly egregious.

Mitchell’s defence tried to cite his previous clean record and mental health struggles during the offences, but the judges rejected these claims. They focused on the lasting psychological trauma inflicted on the victims.

Met Police Face Fresh Scrutiny

This scandal adds fuel to the fire over the Metropolitan Police’s internal culture, already under investigation for various misconduct cases. Met Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy expressed deep regret, saying Mitchell’s actions severely damage public trust in the police.

Mitchell was sacked from the force after his arrest and now faces a significantly longer stretch behind bars, as courts vow to crack down on grave abuses of power and deliver justice for survivors of sexual violence.
