Merseyside Police have provided an update following the violent disorder that erupted in Southport on Tuesday, July 30. The incident left 53 officers injured, including eight with serious injuries, as well as damage to public property and police dogs.
The violence, which took place late Tuesday night, saw Merseyside Police officers, along with officers from Lancashire Police, facing extreme hostility. Of the 53 injured officers, 49 were from Merseyside Police and four from Lancashire Police. Eight officers sustained serious injuries, including fractures, lacerations, a suspected broken nose, and concussion. Other officers suffered head injuries, and severe facial trauma, and one was knocked unconscious.
Additionally, three police dogs were injured during the disorder. Police Dog Zoe sustained a leg laceration and required stitches, PD Ike suffered a cut mouth and swelling to his front leg, and PD Quga experienced burns to her back leg. Another dog, PD Repo, was spared injury thanks to the quick actions of its handler who kicked petrol away.
Despite the chaos, the local community and partner agencies, including Sefton Council, have rallied to restore order and clean up the streets. Volunteers have been working tirelessly, using hose pipes and brushes, and donating food for officers and dog food for the injured police dogs.

Chief Superintendent Zoe Thornton expressed her gratitude for the community’s support and condemned the violence. “The support from the public has been overwhelming. We are working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of our officers and the community.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather evidence and track down more suspects involved in the disorder.
