Five men have been arrested and charged in connection with a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation into a people-smuggling network operating between the UK and France. The suspects, believed to be part of a criminal enterprise facilitating illegal migration, were detained during coordinated dawn raids across London on 20 November.
Alleged Roles in Smuggling Network
The arrested individuals, aged between 43 and 54, are reportedly of Algerian and Egyptian origin. Among them is a 52-year-old Algerian national, suspected to be a senior figure within the smuggling operation. The other four men are accused of driving migrants in vehicles to rendezvous points where they were loaded into lorries bound for France.
The group is charged with conspiracy to facilitate illegal entry into an EU country. They appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 21 November.
NCA Investigation and Arrests
The arrests follow a long-running investigation into the smuggling of over 200 North African migrants, including children, who were discovered in lorry trailers travelling from the UK to France during separate incidents in 2023. The operation has resulted in 20 arrests so far, with five individuals already convicted and jailed for transporting migrants.
Chris Hill, NCA Branch Commander, described the operation as a pivotal step in dismantling a dangerous and exploitative criminal network.
“These arrests represent a key moment in our ongoing investigation into a large-scale criminal network responsible for smuggling North African migrants from the UK to France,” Hill stated. “People smugglers don’t care about the safety or wellbeing of the human beings they transport. They’re driven solely by profits.”
Ongoing Threat and Operations
The NCA highlighted that people smuggled out of the UK via lorries may be attempting to evade law enforcement, avoid French immigration checks, or may be victims of trafficking and exploitation. The risks to those being transported, as well as the implications for border security, remain high.
Hill emphasized the NCA’s commitment to tackling organised immigration crime, stating:
“This is one of over 70 ongoing NCA operations targeting top-tier people smuggling gangs, which remains a priority for the agency.”

People smuggling networks often overlap with other criminal activities, such as trafficking and exploitation. The NCA’s efforts to disrupt these networks not only address border security risks but also aim to protect vulnerable individuals from harm.
