The first confirmed victim of Storm Darragh has been identified as Paul Fiddler, a well-loved football coach and assistant manager at Lytham Town FC. Paul, who was in his 40s, tragically lost his life when a tree fell onto his Citroen van during gale-force winds on the A59 in Longton, Lancashire, on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the Lancashire Police headquarters at around 9 a.m., but despite their efforts, Paul was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Devastating Loss

Paul, who also worked at a local TV shop, was described as a devoted coach, footballer, and friend. Lytham Town FC paid tribute to him in a heartfelt statement:

“Today, we would like to take the time to remember a Lytham Town FC legend, Paul Fiddler. Our thoughts are with the Lytham Town lads, his friends, and family at this time. Rest in Peace Paul. We will miss you.”

Paul’s niece, Katie Elliott, shared an emotional message on social media:

“I love you so much, Uncle Paul. I wish I could have known or even said goodbye to you. You will always be in my heart. Thank you for everything you have ever done for me and for being the best uncle I could ask for.”

Friends and community members also expressed their grief online:

“Paul was a massive support for countless families in their moments of need, and his kindness will always be remembered,” one wrote.

“Rest in peace, Paul. One of the nicest blokes you could ever meet. Thoughts are with your family,” another added.

Storm Darragh’s Impact

Paul’s death marks the first of two confirmed fatalities linked to Storm Darragh, which has brought devastation across the UK with winds exceeding 90mph. Roofs have been ripped off buildings, trees uprooted, and widespread flooding reported.

More than 259,000 homes have lost power, and numerous travel disruptions have occurred, including the closure of the Prince of Wales and Severn Bridges. Premier League matches and other events have also been affected, with severe safety concerns prompting cancellations.

Investigation and Appeal

Lancashire Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Detective Sergeant Matt Davidson stated:

“Very sadly, this incident has resulted in the death of a man, and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time. An investigation is ongoing, and I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or has any dashcam or mobile phone footage to please get in touch.”
