Beloved Football Coach Paul Fiddler Dies in Storm Darragh Tragedy

Paul Fiddler, a cherished football coach and assistant manager at Lytham Town FC, has been named as the first confirmed victim of Storm Darragh. The tragic 40-something lost his life when a tree crashed onto his Citroen van during fierce gale-force winds on the A59 in Longton, Lancashire, early Saturday morning.

Emergency Services Rush to Storm Scene

Emergency teams arrived near the Lancashire Police headquarters around 9 a.m. but sadly could not save Paul, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Community Mourns a Legend

Known for his dedication both on and off the pitch, Paul also worked at a local TV shop and was beloved by friends and family alike. Lytham Town FC paid moving tribute:

“Today, we would like to take the time to remember a Lytham Town FC legend, Paul Fiddler. Our thoughts are with the Lytham Town lads, his friends, and family at this time. Rest in Peace Paul. We will miss you.”

Paul’s niece Katie Elliott shared her heartbreak on social media:

“I love you so much, Uncle Paul. I wish I could have known or even said goodbye to you. You will always be in my heart. Thank you for everything you have ever done for me and for being the best uncle I could ask for.”

Friends also paid tribute online:

  • “Paul was a massive support for countless families in their moments of need, and his kindness will always be remembered.”
  • “Rest in peace, Paul. One of the nicest blokes you could ever meet. Thoughts are with your family.”

Storm Darragh’s Deadly Impact

Paul’s death marks one of two confirmed fatalities linked to Storm Darragh, which has battered the UK with 90mph winds. The storm ripped roofs off buildings, uprooted trees, and triggered widespread flooding.

Over 259,000 homes plunged into darkness and major travel hubs, including the Prince of Wales and Severn bridges, were closed. Premier League matches and other events faced cancellations amid safety fears.

Police Launch Investigation

Lancashire Police launched a probe into the fatal incident. Detective Sergeant Matt Davidson appealed for witnesses:

“Very sadly, this incident has resulted in the death of a man, and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time. An investigation is ongoing, and I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or has any dashcam or mobile phone footage to please get in touch.”

The public is urged to contact Lancashire Police with any information.
