Murder probe launched after man killed in hit-and-run crash in Harlow
Tragic Collision in Harlow
Detectives have opened a murder investigation after a man in his 20s died in a fatal collision in Harlow on Saturday, 29 March.
Police were called around 5:30 pm following reports of a collision between a silver Mitsubishi and a pedestrian near a cycle path off Momples Road. The vehicle reportedly left the road, struck the man, and then sped off.
Paramedics rushed to the scene but sadly pronounced the victim, who was from London, dead at the scene. His family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers.
Car Abandoned and Set on Fire
Shortly after the crash, the same silver Mitsubishi was found abandoned and ablaze at an underpass near the Clock Tower Roundabout. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and the vehicle has been seized for forensic examination.
Possible Link to Earlier Car Theft
Investigators are probing if the crash is connected to the theft of a black Ford Fiesta from Pennymead, Harlow, reported at around 4 pm the same day.
The stolen Fiesta was later discovered abandoned in Churchfield, Harlow, and it too has been seized for investigation.
Investigation Underway, Police Appeal for Witnesses
The Serious Crime Directorate is leading the investigation. A cordon remains around the collision site as officers patrol Harlow, engaging with local residents.
Detective Inspector Alison Hooper said: “At the centre of this incident is a person who has lost their life in terrible circumstances. We are supporting a grieving family. I have a dedicated team working hard to establish the sequence of events which led to this fatal collision, and this investigation is making progress.”
She added: “We’re particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the vehicles in question in the Harlow area in the hours leading up to this collision. I appreciate this is a very serious incident which will cause concern in Harlow, but I’d ask that the public refrain from any unhelpful speculation which could cause further upset.”
