WhatsApp to ditch older iPhones from May 2025! Thousands of UK users face losing access to the messaging giant if their device can’t run iOS 15.1 or newer.
WhatsApp drops support for ancient iPhones
From 5 May 2025, WhatsApp will no longer work on iPhones stuck on older software. Specifically, if your phone runs iOS 12 or below, you’re out of luck.
This hits owners of classic models that can’t upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7, including:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
Since these phones are stuck on ancient software, WhatsApp says goodbye.
Why the axe on older iPhones?
WhatsApp, according to insider site WABetaInfo, is ditching old iOS to boost performance and roll out fresh features.
“Newer versions of iOS include updated APIs and improved technologies that WhatsApp relies on to deliver new features,” they said. “By not supporting older versions, WhatsApp will be able to optimise the app and introduce new features that simply wouldn’t be possible with outdated operating systems.”
The messaging giant gave a five-month heads-up in late 2024, urging users to update their OS – or get a new phone.
Your next move: Upgrade or lose WhatsApp
If your handset can’t run iOS 15.1 or above, your only choice is to buy a new iPhone if you want to keep messaging. This cut affects both standard and business WhatsApp users alike.
iPhone 5s, 6 or 6 Plus owners: Back up your WhatsApp chats now and start planning your new phone purchase before 5 May 2025, or risk being cut off.
