A strike by refuelling staff at Gatwick Airport began today (Thursday, May 16), in a pay dispute that threatens disruption to flights during one of the busiest periods of the year.
The walkout, organised by Unite the Union, involves workers employed by Redline Oil Services, and is due to continue until Tuesday, May 20.
The industrial action could affect a number of airlines, particularly easyJet, one of Redline’s primary clients, as well as Air India and Uganda Airlines, Unite said.
May Half-Term Travel at Risk
Further strike action is scheduled between May 23 and May 27, coinciding with the May half-term school holiday, a critical time for UK travel.
A Gatwick Airport spokesperson said:
“We are aware of the proposed industrial action from Redline Oil and are working closely with them and our airlines to minimise impacts to passengers.
Passengers should contact their airline directly for more information.”
Despite the walkout, easyJet has indicated it expects to operate flights as planned during the initial strike period.
Separate Baggage Handler Strike Suspended
In a separate development, a planned strike by Red Handling baggage and check-in staff on May 18 and May 25 was called off after the company submitted proof of pension payments following complaints of late and missing contributions.
Over 100 workers had been set to walk out, but will now vote on a new pay and conditions offer, according to Unite. A further strike on June 1 is still scheduled, pending the ballot outcome.
The new deal reportedly includes:
Unite regional officer Ben Davis said:
“Red Handling has returned to negotiations and made an improved offer. Unite has suspended strike action to allow members to be balloted on the proposals.”
Red Handling services several airlines including Norse, Norwegian, TAP, Delta, and Saudia.
