Unexplained Death of 84-Year-Old Mohammed Akram Sparks Inquest in Ilford
An inquest has been launched into the mysterious death of Mohammed Akram, 84, whose body was found at his home on Staines Road, Ilford, on June 12. The elderly man’s death is described as “unusual” and now under formal investigation by East London Coroner’s Court.
Catastrophic Injuries Lead to Fatal Blood Loss
Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine confirmed Mr Akram suffered a deep abdominal cut causing haemorrhagic hypovolemia—a deadly loss of blood. The nature of the wound prompted an immediate inquest to uncover whether the injury was accidental or deliberate.
“That cause of death triggers in my mind the necessity to open an inquest,” said Mr Irvine. “If a cause of death is unnatural or is unknown, a coroner should hold an investigation.”
Mr Akram was found unresponsive and cold by emergency services. Despite a swift response by police and paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene.
No Foul Play Found—But Questions Still Linger
Metropolitan Police investigations initially ruled out foul play, stating there was “no evidence to suggest Mr Akram’s injuries were caused by anybody else.” However, Coroner Irvine described the circumstances as “far from typical” and requested a formal witness statement from the CID officer responsible for that decision.
Family Granted Rights to Take Part in Inquest
Mr Akram’s son and daughter attended the inquest opening, officially designated as “interested persons.” This status allows them legal representation and full access to the investigation materials. The coroner has urged the family to submit a detailed account of events leading up to the death, including anything they “saw and heard” before the incident.
Full Inquest Scheduled for December 2025
The formal inquest will take place in December 2025. It will examine all evidence and hear from witnesses to determine what truly happened in the tragic case.
The Ilford community remains stunned, anxiously awaiting answers as the investigation unfolds.
