Inquest Opens Into Death of “Kind and Loving” Woman Zahwa Mukhtar in Chadwell Heath

A “kind and loving” 27-year-old woman who died from a head injury outside a care home in Chadwell Heath has been remembered by her family as an “inspiration” to all who knew her.

Found Collapsed Outside Care Home

Zahwa Mukhtar was discovered collapsed outside Chadwell House Residential Care Home in Chadwell Heath Lane at around 5.30am on Saturday, 16 August.

She was treated by emergency services but was tragically pronounced dead at 6.21am.

A forensic post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as a head injury, East London Coroner’s Court heard today (27 August).

Murder Investigation Underway

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police launched a murder investigation following Zahwa’s death.

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, while three others have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All remain under investigation.

Police have stressed that they believe this was an isolated incident but said there will continue to be an increased officer presence in the area.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hobbs said:

“Although we have now made arrests, local residents will continue to see an increased number of officers in and around the area while our investigative work is carried out.

I would ask anyone who was in the area of Romford, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to speak to us.”

Family Tribute

Zahwa, who was born and lived in Hackney, was described by her family as “kind and loving” with “high aspirations in life.”

In a tribute, they said:

“Zahwa was a kind and loving person with high aspirations in life and her presence brought warmth to those around her.

She was dearly loved by her family and friends. Zahwa’s tragic loss has left us heartbroken, and she will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her memory will live on in our hearts forever.”

Inquest Proceedings

Coroner Nadia Persaud formally opened the inquest, saying:

“I’m satisfied on the fact that the death occurred in circumstances which require an inquest being opened.”

A provisional date for the full inquest has been set for March 2026, though this may be delayed pending the outcome of any criminal proceedings.
