Reform UK Eyes Historic Win in Luton By-Election
Reform UK is gunning for its first-ever seat on Luton Borough Council in today’s crucial Stopsley by-election. This contest could be a game-changer for Nigel Farage’s party as it tries to snatch a seat long held by the Lib Dems.
Stopsley Ward Up for Grabs After Councillor’s Death
The by-election was triggered by the recent death of Liberal Democrat deputy leader Councillor David Wynn. Wynn and his party had dominated Stopsley for years, clinching every seat in the ward for the last four elections. In 2023, they secured a staggering 78% of the vote, sealing a landslide victory.
But Reform UK candidate Jim Cohen hopes to break the Lib Dem monopoly. A win here would inject new momentum into Reform UK, which has been making local election gains nationwide.
Can Reform UK Break the Lib Dem Stronghold?
Stopsley currently has two Liberal Democrat councillors alongside the late Wynn’s seat. The political mix on Luton Borough Council stands at 30 Labour, 15 Lib Dems, and 3 Conservatives.
Mark Fowler, the returning officer for the vote, said: “This by-election gives all eligible residents in Stopsley the opportunity to elect a ward councillor to represent them. The role of a local councillor in our town is a significant and vital one, as they demonstrate their understanding of what matters to people in their local area and ensure that local democracy is strong and effective.”
Results Expected Overnight
The polls close at 10pm tonight, with results expected soon after. If Reform UK nails it, they’ll make a historic breakthrough on the Luton Council – shaking up a ward long dominated by the Lib Dems and sending shockwaves through local politics.
