Chaos and Horses: Wickham Horse Fair 2017 Draws Crowds and Clashes
Wickham, Hampshire, Saturday 20th May 2017 – The annual Wickham Horse Fair brought hundreds flooding into the quaint Hampshire village this weekend. The centuries-old event, tracing back over 800 years, remains one of the UK’s biggest horse trading extravaganzas, drawing traveller communities from all over the country.
Historic Horse Fair Packs the Streets
Though there’s no formal organiser, Wickham Horse Fair has grown into a national highlight alongside just one other major horse trading event. Locals and visitors lined the streets, soaking up the bustling atmosphere filled with vibrant stalls, equine action, and traditional flair.
Police and RSPCA on High Alert
Despite the fun, things got heated at times. Hampshire Constabulary officers swiftly broke up a few scuffles, ensuring tempers didn’t flare out of control. Meanwhile, the RSPCA stepped in to rescue several poorly treated horses, led by Superintendent Alison Heydari.
“The event is steeped in history for Wickham,” said Superintendent Heydari. “We’ve been working closely with Hampshire County Council, Winchester City Council, Wickham Parish Council, and local licensed premises to keep everyone safe and make sure the day runs smoothly.”
Peace Prevails but Past Troubles Loom
The fair has mostly stayed peaceful in recent years, though it’s not without its darker moments. Back in 2013, six people were convicted after a public order incident involving dangerous catapults threatened the event’s reputation.
But this year, thanks to a strong police and council presence, the Wickham Horse Fair kept its traditional charm with minimal trouble, proving it remains a much-loved, if occasionally feisty, fixture in the British calendar.
