Mother’s Drug Addiction Blamed for Boy’s Tragic Death

Seven-year-old Hakeem Hussain was found lifeless in a Birmingham garden in November 2017. A court heard Hakeem’s mother, Laura Heath, put her drug addiction before her son’s wellbeing.

Manslaughter by Gross Negligence

Laura Heath, 40, was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence and admitted four counts of child cruelty at Coventry Crown Court. The trial revealed the boy died alone, “gasping for air” outside the property where she was staying.

Heath’s heroin and crack cocaine addiction spiralled out of control in the months before Hakeem’s death. She spent £55 daily on drugs, partly funded through sex work. Shockingly, one of Hakeem’s inhalers was re-purposed as a makeshift crack pipe.

Neglect Led to Asthma Attack and Death

On the fatal night, Heath smoked heroin and passed out in bed with Hakeem. The young boy, likely worsened by second-hand smoke, suffered a severe asthma attack. Unable to rouse his mother, he apparently went outside for fresh air but was found dead the next morning clutching a leaf.

Mr Justice Dove condemned Heath’s “catastrophic and deplorable” parenting. He said Hakeem’s death was “needless, tragic and a result of your abject failure as his mother.”

Warnings Ignored Before Deadly Outcome

  • Hakeem had battled asthma and breathing problems since age three.
  • Authorities were repeatedly concerned about his medical care at home.
  • He had been without his preventative inhaler for two days, left uncollected by Heath.
  • Just two days before his death, a nurse warned he would die “by the weekend” if no action was taken.
  • Health, education, and social workers planned intervention, but Hakeem died on the Sunday before they could act.

A post-mortem confirmed death due to uncontrolled asthma. Toxicology tests showed Hakeem inhaled tobacco smoke shortly before dying and had ingested heroin, crack cocaine, and cannabis.

Defence QC Isabella Forshall said Heath’s drug addiction, developed in her teens, was a recognised mental condition. However, the devastating consequences were clear: a young life cut short by neglect and addiction.
